Guilford Building

Formerly the site of Fort Washington, the location also once was occupied by a boardinghouse where Stephen Foster lived from 1846-1850. The building was named after Nathan Guilford who championed the idea of supporting public schools with a property tax.

Unique FeaturesThe building's dual entries were designed for access by girls on one end and boys on the other. The rooftop terraces served as playgrounds for the inner city school.
